Stretching vs mobility: what's the difference?

Published

Stretching is an activity. Flexibility describes the available stretch in tissues. Mobility describes your ability to actively move a joint through its range. HSS explains the distinction.

How they fit together

  • Static stretching: hold a position.
  • Dynamic stretching: move through a range.
  • Mobility practice: work on actively using and controlling movement.

Being flexible doesn't automatically mean you can control every position you can reach. Strength and control also matter. HSS on flexibility and mobility.

Which should you choose?

Start with your purpose. Preparing for exercise, taking a desk break, and practicing a held stretch are different tasks. Look at the actual movements rather than relying only on the routine's label.

For workout timing, read stretching before or after exercise.

Capacity includes stretching and mobility routines, with manual exercise variations where available. Its statistics track your activity, not physical mobility gains.
