Should you stretch before or after a workout?
Published
Before exercise, use a gradual warm-up and controlled dynamic movements. After exercise—or separately after warming up—static stretches can give you time to practice flexibility. HSS guidance.
Before: prepare for the activity
Start with light movement, then use preparation that matches your workout. Dynamic exercises move through a range rather than holding one position.
The NHS offers a general warm-up with marching, knee lifts, and shoulder rolls. See the routine.
Keep any activity-specific preparation your training plan calls for. A generic stretching routine won't necessarily cover everything.
After: take time for held stretches
Choose comfortable positions rather than chasing the deepest range. How long should you hold a stretch?
At another time of day?
That's an option too. Warm up with light activity before starting held stretches. Harvard Health guidance.
