How long should you hold a stretch?

Published

About 30 seconds is a common starting recommendation for a static stretch. Breathe normally and stop if it hurts; a timer isn't a reason to force a position. Mayo Clinic guidance.

A hold or a movement?

A static stretch holds a position. A dynamic exercise moves through a range. Follow the specific instructions: 30 seconds may mean one hold or several controlled repetitions. HSS explanation.

Can you split the time?

Harvard Health describes accumulating 60 seconds for a stretching exercise—for example, two 30-second holds. This is general guidance, not a reason to stay in an uncomfortable position. Duration recommendations.

Leave time to change position

Check instructions before starting and allow enough transition time between movements. Longer holds don't solve an unclear setup.

In Capacity, set exercise durations before the session and change break duration during it.
