How to start stretching when you're inflexible

Published

Start with a few comfortable movements and a routine you can repeat. You don't need to reach the floor or match the deepest position in a video.

Make the first session manageable

  1. Choose a purpose: a morning routine, movement break, or practice after exercise.
  2. Preview the movements: check positions, instructions, and equipment.
  3. Warm up first: do some light activity before held stretches.
  4. Use a comfortable range: avoid bouncing or forcing painful positions.
  5. Keep a familiar option: repeat what suits you before adding more.

Mayo Clinic recommends warming up and stretching without pain. Stretching guidance.

What if an exercise is too difficult?

Pause and look for a suitable variation or another movement. A “beginner” label doesn't guarantee every exercise fits your starting point.

Capacity lets you set durations, read instructions during sessions, and switch supported difficulty variations. Not every movement has an easier option.
